5k and Maine Adventures

Tuesday....
Wow, my legs were dead! That 5k was a nice refresher for the racing muscles and race mentality but I totally forgot how much running races drain you. I ended up running faster than I expected, I'd say probably about 7:25 minute miles as my time was a 23:12, which I'm pretty proud of considering I haven't really run a race for about a year. AND, I got a nice little trophy for my shelf for coming in second for my age group. It's one of the very few running trophies I've collected throughout my life :P That run was preluded by a mile(ish) warmup then concluded with the best run ever: BEACH RUNNING. I can't tell you how much I love running on the beach, there's just something about it that makes it so wonderful. All and all it turned into a slightly longer day, about an hour and fourty-five minutes total. But the sun was out and the sunscreen was not on my back. I ended up running in a sportsbra because I got so hot but the suncreeen was only on the lines of my tshirt and that set me up for my killer burn that now occupies my back. Oh bundles of joy.
Victory dance attempt? maybe? Nah....
Wednesday...
And Wednesday's events were extremely productive as I found myself out the door by 6:15am and picking up my lovely Addikay and we headed up to Weld to take on Little Jackson. So while you were sleeping the morning away, we were tackling mountains. We literally CHARGED that mountain, no breaks until the top (except to brush off the occasional huge blackfly). The top was so beautiful especially in the morning like that . We encountered one other early adventurer, but besides him, we had the mountain all to ourselves. After running down, and Addie finding herself walking dead straight into a tree, I drove to Auburn to have my last -hopefully- orthodontist appointment. That afternoon was a little more sketch. I had plans to bike up to Weld however, the gods of thunder, lightning, and all things stormy had other plans. I got about ten miles from my house and the clouds were coming fast out of no where. So I high-tailed it back (I'm counting it as one chunk of level three because I didn't go under 24mph the entire way back) and found myself dead in the middle of a thunderstorm. I hid under a information platform/display thing at the local wilderness conservancy but that happens to be in a giant field, so I didn't feel any safer. After frantically calling my parents, I was picked up safely in one piece and not fried to a crisp. Later that night, after the storm had lifted I got to drive a jetski for the first time around the lake. I must say, I may have found my new favorite toy...

Thursday+Saturday
Thursday I occupied myself with double poling and specific strength drills on my roller skis and did 6x500m repeats with progressively faster splits. This route I was on this time had hills in it, so my times were slower than my last set of this workout, but I think I may have also paced off a longer route so that might explain the difference. But all and all I felt extremely strong and my strides were efficient and powerful. Friday I took off as I was still feeling the effects of an extremely long training week from the REG camp but today was an amazing bounding threshold day. I was able to go over to my home mountain and thanks to some dedicated crew workers, I was able to bound on perfectly mowed trails. I warmed up and pumped out 3x6x12x6x3min intervals with rest in between. So all together it was about an hour and fourty-five minutes. It probably takes the cake on the best workout this week as I had almost *perfect time spent in level three. Just a tad shy. I was so happy to be back on my home trails though. There's just something that makes you so happy when you return to the place where everything started. I mean, my entire ski career is based at this mountain, everything from the Bill Koch Festival: Feel the Rythym, to KVAC meets, and everything in between. Mind you hopefully, these trails will be home to an Eastern Cup this year. They're technical, narrow, and so much fun (not that I'm biased at all :P) So all you guys will be able to experience the racing that I grew up with, which is something I'm so excited to share with you.

Homegrown! There is nothing like returning to your home trails :)
Keep training! 2012 is bound to be a great season! Cheers!
